Cambodia’s Traditional Shadow Puppet Show Sbek Thom

Sbek Thom is a traditional Cambodian shadow puppet show. Passed down from before the Angkor Kingdom, this performance is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity along with Apsara Dance. The shadow puppets used in Sbek Thom are made of cowhide. To make a doll, a cowhide is colored using a dye made of bark called Kadaol, a sketch is drawn on the cowhide, which is elaborately crafted, and bamboo is attached so that it can move from the bottom. A shadow puppet is made very elaborately and carefully to express even the detailed decoration. With these dolls, a puppet show is usually performed outdoors at night by burning a coconut shell behind a white cloth to light up brightly so that the dolls’ shadowsreflect on the white screen. Performances usually depict stories based on Ramayana (a life story of KingRama) and Hindu mythology. In the past, puppet shows were performed about 3-4 times a year only on special days such as the New Year's Festival, King's Birthday, and holidays, but they are held in concert halls and restaurants for tourists these days.
